Climate Crisis: Niagara Artists’ Perspectives
June 4, 2022 @ 8:00 am - June 25, 2022 @ 5:00 pm
The climate crisis has established itself as the defining issue of the 21st century. We are facing changes in our lived environment deemed unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years.1 These are rapidly becoming the focus of the international community – bringing the crisis to the forefront of global media and politics and to the lives of people across generations. And yet, great divides remain between people and nations; and there still exists strong denial of its very existence. Why is it that, despite increasingly widespread acknowledgment of climate change and its dire consequences, we cannot bring ourselves to take the immediate action required to avert catastrophe? As we witness the transformation of our world, we search for ways to respond and, as has so often occurred during historical periods of disruption, we’ve turned to our artists to help us understand our experience. Thus, this exhibit brought over 15 Niagara artists together to express their perspectives on the climate crisis through paintings and other objects of visual art. 25% of the proceeds from the sale of the artwork will be donated to Land Care Niagara, an organization dedicated to responsible environmental stewardship.
